Japanese painter and draughtsman Yoshizawa Setsuan (1809–1889) was a pupil of Tosaka Bun’yo. Heavily influenced by the bunjin or literati style of the earlier Edo period, Setsuan produced many paintings of idealized landscapes, flowers, and birds. The images in this calendar were created using colored ink on silk and paper. They are leaves from his 1876 sketchbook depicting birds, flowers, landscapes, and flowerpots.
