Serotonin is a chemical which is produced by nerve cells. It is predominantly found in the digestive systems, although it is also found in blood platelets and throughout the central nervous system. The serotonin test can aid in the diagnose of carcinoid syndrome. Carcinoid syndrome is a group of indicators linked to carcinoid tumors. These are tumors of the bronchial tubes, colon, appendix, colon and small intestine.
Symptoms of having this test performed may include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Rapid heartbeat
- Flushing of the neck and face
- Wheezing and coughing
