The Quantitative Rapid Plasma Reagin Test, also known as an RPR Test, is useful in the diagnosis of the sexually transmitted disease syphilis and monitoring of its treatment.
The RPR Test is also known as Rapid Plasma Reagin. No fasting is required for this blood test, and results will be delivered within 1-2 days. This is a quick, low-cost, confidential alternative to a doctor visit. No insurance is required to order this test.
The quantitative RPR Test measures the level of antibodies present in the blood. It is typically used for monitoring treatment of syphilis infections and/or determining if treatment was successful.
Syphilis is treated with antibiotics in early stages of infection, and newly acquired infections tend to be easily cured. Treatment may take longer in patients who have been infected for more than a year. Following treatment, syphilis antibodies should be lower. If antibodies remain the same, a persistent infection may be present. Higher antibodies may indicate reinfection. Quantitative RPR Test results are reported as reactive or nonreactive at dilutions of 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, 1:32, 1:64, etc.
Please see the qualitative Rapid Plasma Reagin Test page for more details about syphilis, its diagnosis and testing procedures.
